#Free Culture: Without It, We Can't Survive The Internet lets us communicate and share information with anyone who wants it. This power of the Internet is both beautiful and terrifying. From the moment you come into contact with this sphere of influence, you feel its power and realize that without rules, values, and limitations to regulate our lives, we would never be able to coexist in peace. The unbridled freedom we have in the digital world needs a certain level of enforcement for people not to regress into chaos and anarchy. This enforcement comes from copyright laws which protect intellectual property rights for an artist's work. The protection of artistic works promotes creativity and keeps knowledge circulating in the world. Unfortunately, the enforcement of such laws is done through a system different from one that promotes human rights, dignity, and personal freedom. The system is based on authority instead of principles. The power of the ruling elite over any given form of expression has become so excessive that these forces are no longer content with simply having total control over how we use our intellects. Instead, they demand that they be allowed to determine what can or can't be known. Copyright laws, which were originally meant to protect people, are now being used as a tool to suppress the public. The Internet has made it imperative for us to re-examine all of our beliefs and principles around intellectual property rights. Intellectual property rights are simply an ambiguous manifestation of the legal system's need for control over artistic creations. All of our lives, we have existed within a system that does not question authority or promote human rights. We're all conditioned to believe that the law is the law and everything else is irrelevant. This means that there is no room for questioning what's right or wrong about laws that govern society, only obedience to these rules is required. This type of thought process breeds ignorance and consequentially, it has helped facilitate the creation of copyright laws that are destroying our freedoms. Intellectual property rights are not only controlling the distribution of knowledge but also one's thoughts and opinions. In order to continue on as a society, we must constantly remind ourselves that even though the law is the law, it does not determine what is right or wrong. We must understand that as human beings, we have a responsibility to question authority and learn what is necessary to live peacefully with one another. Intellectual property rights restrict people from freely sharing knowledge which makes us all inferior in terms of our access to information. The free exchange of information, culture and ideas is a vital part of a healthy society. Intellectual property and copyright laws do not promote human rights and it's time for us to realize this and stand up against them. These types of laws allow the media industry to suppress any form of expression that does not support its interests. It is important that we come together as a collective body of conscious people who recognize the dangers of such laws and the current system which allows for their creation. Not only is intellectual property violating our human rights but it is also obstructing cultural evolution. cfa1e77820
